LPG LaserLine spark plugs are dual precious metal spark plugs specifically developed for gas-fuelled engines. The combustion of gas is different from the combustion of petrol and, therefore requires spark plugs that are specially adapted for these conditions. The gas-air mixtures are more difficult to ignite as more ignition voltage is required and the risk of failure of the ignition coils increases. NGK Laserline spark plugs come with a lifetime of up to 60,000 km, clearly outperforming “normal” spark plugs. LPG Laserline spark plugs feature an iridium tipped centre electrode and a ground electrode that contains a platinum chip. The tip of iridium is attached in a specially developed laser welding process patented by NGK. The advantage: These precious metals are resistant to the unfavourable conditions in gas powered engines. The spark gap remains virtually unchanged throughout the entire service life. A copper core in the ground electrode of every LPG Laserline spark plug improves the temperature discharge, which helps to regulate the higher temperatures in gas powered engines. A specially developed insulator protects these spark plugs from fouling when being used on regular petrol. Heat Shield for the Metal Shell. A special alloy coating covers the shell of every LPG Laserline spark plug, protecting it from the higher temperatures and the increased risk of corrosion. Less Stress on the Ignition Coils. Studies conducted by NGK show that the required ignition voltage in gas powered engines increases by as much as 7,000 volts – an acid test for the ignition coils. The iridium centre electrode of Laserline spark plugs is only 0.6 mm in diameter, this provides a counter measure since it requires a lower ignition voltage, in-turn reducing stress on the coils. The shape of the electrode also facilitates optimum advance of the flame front. DO NOT USE ANTI-SEIZE LUBRICANT SUCH AS COPPER SLIP ON THE THREADS WHEN FITTING THESE SPARK PLUGS. Using such thread lubricants can result in over-torqued values by up to 20-25%. Torque wrench readings are rendered completely inaccurate and can result in major damage to the engines cylinder head, or sheer the spark plug threads. Virtually all modern spark plugs feature a special zinc-chromate shell plating which provides corrosion resistance to the elements, so no thread lubricant is required. Shown below is an over torqued spark plug that sheered due to user installation error. Incorrect torque can also result in poor engine performance, read below. Spark plugs do not make full contact with the cylinder head which reduces the plug’s ability to transfer heat out of the combustion chamber, this results in elevated combustion temperatures and as such can cause pre-ignition and detonation. These two conditions can lead to engine damage. Evidence of under-torqueing can be seen via the crush washer gasket not being as thin as expected (unless it’s a tapered type plug). Spark plugs can cause stress to the metal shell, leading to thread breakage (sheer) as shown in the image below. Over tightening can also compromise the plug’s internal gas seal or even cause a hairline fracture to the insulator. Evidence of over torque is easy to spot, for example hex swelling is visible and usually the crush washer is thinner than expected. If the thread has sheered the breakage will look similar to the spark plug image shown below. It’s advisable to use a good quality, calibration certified torque-wrench. Users should always wind down their torque-wrench to the minimum scale setting and never all the way down after each use. A fully loaded torque wrench left in storage for a long period of time can cause a’set’ in the spring and weaken it. The result can be an inaccurate torque reading. Care must also be taken to ensure the spark plug socket is not slanted at an angle as this can put pressure on the ceramic insulator causing it to crack. Compressed air should be used to clean the area around the existing spark plugs before removal. Torqueing the new spark plugs up against any form of debris and build-up in the threads may prevent the plugs from making full contact with the cylinder head, even if a torque wrench indicates otherwise. This can cause poor heat dissipation which leads to higher cylinder temperatures, possibly causing pre-ignition or detonation. On vehicles where positioning a torque wrench is difficult or impossible, finger tighten the plugs first and then follow the rotational guide shown on the NGK packaging with a standard wrench. If the engine design means it’s difficult to fit or remove spark plugs (or even see them), the plug wrench may tilt off-axis or slip. If the socket slips on the plugs hex and the inside wall of it strikes the ribbing on the plug’s insulator, or its terminal, the insulator may break. Some new spark plugs feature a washer gasket that is designed to be crushed during the last stages of tightening. This will feel different to tightening any normal bolt or nut up. Only use a spark plug gapping tool which pulls on the ground electrodes neck to adjust the gap on precious metal spark plugs. The only time anti-seize compound should be used is on vintage spark plugs that do not feature a specialised coating. We only supply 100% genuine NGK spark plugs.
